God’s Window

Where valleys meet the mountains Set across more than 100 hectares of fynbos, farmland and forest in the Overberg, God’s Window is a secluded country retreat surrounded by the Cape Fold Mountains. Designed by South African architect Georg van Gass, the home was built in 2009 as a low-slung, single-level retreat that brings the landscape into every part of the house. Glass, stone, cement and brick create a warm, understated setting, while expansive windows frame the mountains and surrounding wilderness. Inside, considered interiors in deep greens, golds, mahogany, mustard and maroon add warmth and character. An open fireplace, generous bedrooms, quiet reading spaces and long views create an atmosphere made for slowing down. Life at God’s Window Days are spent outdoors and at your own pace. Explore hiking trails through fynbos and forest, swim in waterfalls, dams and natural rock pools, or take to the surrounding dirt roads by mountain bike. The area is rich in birdlife, with sightings of Blue Crane, Secretary Bird, Fish Eagle and African Spoonbill. After a day outside, return to the 15-metre swimming pool, settle beside the fireplace or unwind in one of the home's deep bathtubs. As evening falls and the sounds of the wilderness return, God’s Window becomes exactly what its name suggests: a place to pause, take in the view and simply exhale.
